Demolition crews to knock down Nightcliff public housing block this week

Demolition crews are expected to get to work and start knocking down a Darwin public housing block.

DEMOLITION crews are expected to get to work and start knocking down a public housing block in Nightcliff this week to make way for the $42 million John Stokes Square redevelopment.

NT Excavations and Demolitions (NTEX) was awarded a $1 million contract by the Territory Government to demolish and clear the site to start redeveloping John Stokes Square. Demolition is scheduled to start at the end of May and finish by July.

Once the site has been cleared, construction works will start including the build of a new 24 hour police station; specifically designed homes for seniors and people living with disabilities; a pedestrian friendly link between the Nightcliff Village and Nightcliff Shopping Centre; and

open space and the expansion of local services.

Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics, Eva Lawler said the works would support more than 250 local jobs over the project’s lifetime.

“We understand how important John Stokes Square is for many Territorians and these works will reinvigorate the area — creating a welcoming community hub that connects with the surrounding areas,” she said.

Local Member for Nightcliff Natasha Fyles said the redevelopment of John Stokes would improve lifestyle and the ambience of the Nightcliff central hub.

“This project will deliver the 24-hour police station that will help provide the safe community Nightcliff residents and businesses want and deserve,” she said.
