Crash mum still in ‘stable condition’ at Royal Darwin Hospital

NO charges have been laid over a horror car crash which killed two people overnight Wednesday, the NT Police have said.

A police spokeswoman said the incident was “still in the investigation process”.

A Top End Health spokeswoman said both drivers in the crash, a 42-year-old man and 24-year-old Andrea Groening, were in stable conditions at Royal Darwin Hospital.

Mehali Anastasios Pastrikos, 7, and Wade Williams, 21, both died in the crash at the intersection of Tiger Brennan Dr and Berrimah Rd about midnight Wednesday May 22.

Mehali and Mr Williams were both in a Rav4 being driven by the mother-of-three, Ms Groening.

On Thursday, Infrastructure Minister Eva Lawler announced the permanent reduction of the speed limit at the intersection from 100km/h to 80km/h.

Ms Lawler also asked for speed and red light cameras be installed as soon as possible.

“Our message is clear — road safety is everyone’s business, and we all need to do our part to make sure everyone using our roads gets home safe.”

Rural resident Rob Wesley-Smith said simply lowering the speed limit didn’t address the real issue.

“Accidents at 80km/h are still lethal,” he said.

“There’s been five deaths now in a few years — all that could have been avoided with a flyover.”

Mr Wesley Smith said he’d been asking the NT Government to install an overpass in the area “since the road had been built”.

“It would reduce a lot of traffic and an overpass isn’t that expensive,” he said.

The NT News understands a flyover at this intersection may be considered in line with an increase in future traffic.

The Rav4, travelling down Berrimah Rd, collided with a Ford Ranger, driven by the 42-year-old man who was heading home along Tiger Brennan Dr from work in Jabiru.

A recent update on the page thanked Darwin donors for their generosity.

Another GoFundMe page has also been set up for Mr Williams’ family. Mr Williams, 21, a father of three boys, is originally from Tasmania and efforts are being made to repatriate his body down south.

The page is seeking $50,000, to cover the cost of the repatriation and funeral — it has raised $1098 in three days.
