Darwin left shivering as overnight temperatures drop below 20 degrees

IF you woke up feeling chilly this morning, you weren’t alone. For the first time this Dry season, temperatures right across Darwin fell below 20C.

Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Billy Lynch said temperatures dropped to 19.8C at Darwin Airport overnight.

“On the radar, we’ve got rain areas right across the Top End associated with this cloud band so we’re expecting that to continue throughout the day,” he said.

“The rain might ease a bit in the Top End later this afternoon.

“Generally we’re not expecting it to be that heavy but it’ll be light consistent rain and the cloud cover is definitely going to keep our temperatures quite low.”

He said Darwin is forecast to reach a top of 26C in Darwin and the rural area today.

“The last time we had a 26C in Darwin was 2017 and the last time we had it happen in May was 2012 so it pretty unusual,” he said.

“It gets even more unusual around Katherine where we’re forecasting just a top of 22C that will be an all time May record if that happens.”

He said this chilly weather is expected to stick around until about Saturday midday.
