Colombia appoints its first Honorary Consul in the Territory

The President of Colombia has signed off on historic diplomatic links within the Territory by appointing the Latin American nation’s first honorary Colombian consul in the Territory.

THE president of Latin American country Colombia, Iván Duque Márquez, has signed off on historic diplomatic links within the Territory by appointing the nation’s first honorary Colombian consul in the Northern Territory.

The Honorary Consul is Darwin’s prominent Colombian-Australian citizen Giovanna Webb.

Ms Webb, whose maiden name is Cortés Escamilla, is a former NT and Australian Rural Woman of the Year award winner.

Since her arrival in Australia in 1997, Ms Webb, has been involved in various commercial and community projects of a private and government nature at a national and international level in the areas of tourism, education, research, agriculture and biopolitics.

In 2015 she was recognised by the then Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos, as one of the 100 most outstanding Colombians abroad. Ms Webb, said she was honoured to receive the appointment.

“With an increasing presence of Colombians in the Northern Territory, I’m looking forward to supporting Colombia’s efforts to strengthen economic and cultural relations with the NT as well as providing support to my fellow Colombians living here,” she said.

Ms Webb, has been an executive member of the federal government’s COALAR (Council on Australia Latin America Relations) through which she collaborated in the financing and development of projects between Latin American countries and Australia in the areas of education, art, sports, science and innovation.
