Wild brawl in Casuarina food court

SECURITY measures at Casuarina Square Shopping Centre have been beefed up amid concerns of anti-social behaviour, including the shocking assault of a security guard by a group of youths.

Shocked shoppers at the Casuarina Square were confronted by a group of about six youths allegedly throwing chairs and attacking a security guard on Monday.

Northern Watch Commander Sonia Kennon said security at the centre directed the youths to leave Kmart at about 4pm.

“The youths later congregated around the entrance of Kmart and attacked a security guard who sustained minor injuries,” she said.

“The youths then commenced throwing chairs around the complex.

“As the youths left the area, two of them, aged 13 and 14, were apprehended by security guards.

“At the time of police attendance the security guard who had sustained injures was unsure whether he wanted to make a formal complaint but police will be making further inquiries regarding this incident.”

It comes after a 14-year-old girl allegedly threatened to stab a woman during an attempted bag snatching in the food court earlier this month.

A Casuarina Square spokesman said they continually review security across the centre to ensure it provides a safe environment for shoppers and retailers.

“Casuarina Square’s security management program includes dedicated on-site security patrols of all areas of the centre, and the security presence at the centre has been increased in light of recent events,” he said.

“The centre maintains a very close working relationship with NT Police, who have a regular presence at centre management’s request.”
