THE architects tasked to design Charles Darwin University’s new campus have created some of the most innovative education facilities in Australia.

ARM Architecture, an award-winning practice, developed the eight storey building with the goal of it becoming an iconic and revitalising landmark in the Darwin CBD and to provide students with a world class experience.

The company has designed numerous education facilities, including the University of Melbourne’s Arts West building, the Monash University Chancellery, and the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies in Canberra.

This year ARM received three awards for the Monash University Chancellery and three for the Arts West building, including a national award.

It is unclear if the company has experience designing for Darwin’s tropical savanna climate, with the majority of its projects on the eastern seaboard.

The project was approved by Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics Minister Eva Lawler last week.

However, it is subject to several conditions that will need to be met prior to the development beginning, including protection of the existing baobab tree, energy efficiency and the colour schemes and materials to be used in the final design.

Earthworks are anticipated to start sometime this year, with construction to begin in April 2021.
