Greater Darwin and Katherine areas sent into 3-day lockdown from midday Monday

UPDATE 10AM TUESDAY: GREATER Darwin and Katherine have woken up to their first full day of lockdown after one case of Covid-19 in the community.

Chief Minister Michael Gunner said the positive case is a man in his 30s who travelled to the Territory for legitimate work purposes on Thursday, August 12.

“As a recent international arrival he had been in 14-day quarantine in Sydney,” Mr Gunner said.

He stayed in Darwin for several days and visited “various locations” in the Darwin CBD before travelling to Katherine where he stayed at Knotts Crossing Resort for his contract work at RAAF Base Tindall.

The man returned a positive test on Sunday night, and is set to be transferred to the Howard Springs facility on Monday.

Supermarkets will remain open during the lockdown, and Mr Gunner urged Territorians not to panic buy.

If you have been to a public exposure site listed below at the relevant dates and times, you are considered a close contact you must do the following:

  • Immediately travel by private transport directly to your home or suitable accommodation and self-quarantine
  • Call the Covid-19 Hotline on 1800 490 484 and identify yourself as a close contact
  • You will be required to get tested and undertake 14 days of quarantine.

CASUAL CONTACT SITES

If you have been to any of the below locations at the relevant dates and times you are considered a casual contact and must do the following:

  • Immediately travel by private transport directly to your home or suitable accommodation and self-quarantine.
  • Call the Covid-19 Hotline on 1800 490 484 and identify yourself as a casual contact.
  • Get tested for Covid-19 and remain in self-quarantine until a negative test is returned, even if you are an essential worker.
  • Monitor for Covid-19 symptoms for 14 days.

If you are no longer in the Northern Territory, please check with your relevant state or territory health department for advice and instruction.

LOW RISK CONTACT SITES

If you have been to any of the below locations at the relevant dates and times you are considered a low risk contact and must do the following:

  • Monitor for Covid-19 symptoms for 14 days
  • If you experience any symptoms: Self-quarantine at your home or suitable place of accommodation and get tested for Covid-19 and self-quarantine at home until you return a negative result

If you are no longer in the Northern Territory, please check with your relevant state or territory health department for advice and instruction.

  • The Greater Darwin and Katherine areas now in lockdown include the following areas: City of Darwin, City of Palmerston, Litchfield Council, Wagait Shire, Belyuen Shire, Dundee, Bynoe, Charlotte, Cox Peninsula and the Municipality of Katherine, including Tindal.

    The Covid-19 Hotline has been reopened and can be reached by calling 1800 490 484.

    Supermarkets will remain open during the lockdown, and Mr Gunner urged Territorians not to panic buy.

    Mr Gunner said in order to further limit movement, residents will be required to use click-and-collect services for anything that isn’t groceries, food or medicine, where possible.

    Masks must be worn outside the home, including during exercise.

    The lockdown is set to last until midday Thursday.

    “There is a very real risk that this virus has been transmitted to others,” Mr Gunner said.

    Mr Gunner said schools and childcare will close during the lockdown, but skeleton staff will remain available for the children of essential workers.

    Mr Gunner directed parents who are not essential workers to begin collecting their children from school and childcare, but reassured parents there would be no penalties for those who are unable to collect their kids before midday. School buses will run as normal at 2.30pm.

    There are several Covid-19 public exposure sites in the Northern Territory.

    EARLIER: CHIEF Minister Michael Gunner will hold a press conference this morning alongside the chief health officer and police commissioner following an emergency meeting of NT’s special Covid-19 management.

    Chief Minister Michael Gunner withdrew from a press conference scheduled for 8:30am in relation to the new Darwin data hub to attend a meeting of the Security and Emergency Subcommittee of Cabinet (SEMC) meeting.

    The details of what is being discussed at the meeting is unknown.
