ALL roads out of Darwin were clogged with traffic as thousands of people fled the city to their homes for a three day Covid-19 lockdown from noon on Monday.

Many made a detour to Palmerston, where hundreds rushed to the local shopping centre to buy up goods.

It was bumper to bumper along East Point Road, the Stuart Highway and Tiger Brennan Drive, as workers left their offices and turned the Darwin CBD into a ghost town.

Those that remained were either essential services or city dwellers who swamped the nearby shopping centres to stock up on supplies.
