Darwin milliner Belinda Osbourne comes third in prestigious national awards

THE COVID-19 pandemic afforded the perfect opportunity for a Darwin milliner to showcase one of her most intricate creations.
Peacock Millinery owner Belinda Osborne placed third in the Melbourne Cup’s 2020 Millinery Award for her wire and tulle piece, which features portraits of women and floral designs through multi-layered reverse stencilling.

Ms Osborne created the piece for other competitions, but put the design on hold for fear its intricacy could not be observed by judges.
But with the Cup competition requiring finalists to submit close-up videos and photos of their designs, she knew it was the opportunity she was looking for.

“When you’re looking at it from afar it’s a beautiful mishmash of design lines and shape,” she said.
“When you get up close and look at the detail in the pattern, you say ‘oh my gosh, that’s really detailed, it almost looks like a photo’.”
Ms Osbourne said the design was inspired by the importance of friendship during these times.
“We turn to one another in these hard and difficult times,” she said.

“The hat has this underlying image of support. You can turn to your little social group and they’re there for you. I wanted the wearer to be part of the hat as well.”
Ms Osbourne has competed in the prestigious awards for seven years, and came second in 2019. She was thrilled to place third, and was eager to participate in next year’s awards.
