Man, 30, killed in Darwin rural area crash overnight

A MAN has been killed in a single vehicle crash overnight in the Darwin rural area.

A 30-YEAR-OLD man tragically died in a single vehicle rollover in Girraween on the weekend.

An NT Police spokeswoman said just after 2.30am on Sunday officers found the crash on Power Road, about 600m south of Girraween Road.

The driver had been ejected from the white Toyota Landcruiser utility, which had rolled and come to rest on its side.

A passing motorist assisted police at the scene to check for other passengers while officers performed first aid to the driver.

NT Fire and Rescue and St John Ambulance officers were called but the man later died at the scene. It’s understood he worked for national contracting company BSA.

Detectives from the Major Crash Investigation Unit were called and Power Road was cordoned off for most of yesterday morning .

NT Police Detective Senior Constable First Class Jeshua Kelly said the car had drifted onto the right side of the road, resulting in it striking a kerb and culvert.

“Initial indicators are likely some sort of fatigue, inattention, intoxication,” he said.

At the time police were investigating whether or not the driver was wearing a seatbelt.

He urged Territorians to be safe and vigilant on the roads now and in the lead up to Christmas.

“It’s not hard to wear your seatbelt or get a mate to take you home from the pub,” he said.

“What (people) don’t see is the ripple effects and the families that are devastated and destroyed.

“If you’re not going to do it for yourself, do it for them.”

Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner asked witnesses, family and friends for information regarding the driver’s actions prior to the accident.

“It’s apparent to us from interviewing residents in the area that the police patrol, travelling in the opposite direction, was on scene within a couple minutes of the crash,” he said.

“We’re appealing to anyone who saw the vehicle travelling through Girraween prior to the crash, and any friends or family of the deceased familiar with his movements to contact police.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 131 444, with reference number 9475211.

The Northern Territory’s road toll now sits at 25 for this year.
