'We need to properly resource our security agencies' amid threat of post-Covid crime wave

AUSTRALIAN Federal Police officers are working with NT police in at least three remote communities to help counter child sexual abuse.

AAP reported earlier this week that AFP officers had been deployed to remote NT communities to crack down on abusive material and online grooming.

A review commissioned by the AFP and NT police deemed there to be “very disturbing and concerning” levels of child exploitation and online grooming in some Indigenous communities.

AFP deputy commissioner of operations Brett Pointing told Senate estimates on Monday that police were working hard to address the report findings.

And to help in those finding were eight new technology detection dogs who have the ability to sniff out USBs and hard drives.

“In terms of child sex offending, sadly, one of the things (offenders) hold dear to their heart is their library of images,” Mr Pointing said.

It is understood that police will also be working with Indigenous elders who are worried about the safety of their youth in their communities.

If you were anyone you know is a victim of abuse the lifeline number is 13 11 14 while the kids helpline, for people aged between five and 25 is 1800 55 1800.
