A new fryhouse serving up the Colonel’s finest is one step closer to reality for hungry Top End residents.

A development application for a new KFC in Stuart Park has been given the first green light by planning officials.

The Development Consent Authority has given preliminary consent to the new fast-food outlet, with the applicant now required to submit further plans.

It has been more than 25 years since the Kentucky fried chicken franchise operated in the Darwin city region.

The new KFC is to be built at 43 Stuart Highway in Stuart Park, next door to Sweet Brew cafe, on a single allotment of land that previously held a car dealership.

The plan, lodged by Cunnington Rosse Town Planning and Consulting, sought permission for the single storey building with carparking, landscaping, drive-through lanes and service areas.

“An entry only lane would be located on the Stuart Highway, while an entry and exit is proposed from Ramirez Rd,” initial planning documents read.

“The proposal will reactivate the use and occupation of the subject land, ensuring activity and opportunity for passive surveillance from the external areas, car park, drive-through lanes and from within the building itself.

“The proposed building will significantly improve the appearance of the site from the public realm, with the suitable integration of single storey built form, materials and finishes and landscaping.

“The proposed food premises – fast food outlet is consistent with the relevant requirements of the Northern Territory Planning Scheme, has been suitably designed and located to ensure an attractive, safe and function facility.”

It comes as development on a new Guzman y Gomez takeaway outlet, also located on the Stuart Highway in Stuart Park, nears completion.

The last KFC outlet in the Darwin city region was located on the corner of Mitchell and Knuckey streets.

There are just four KFC stores in the Top End, with outlets in Coconut Grove, Casuarina, Palmerston and Coolalinga.
