Inflation 'starting to bite' fast-food businesses

For the first time in more than 25 years, Darwin City dwellers could soon be able to get their hands on finger licking goodness close to the CBD.

A development application has been lodged for a new KFC at 43 Stuart Highway, Stuart Park.

The plan, prepared by Cunnington Rosse Town Planning and Consulting for Collins Food Limited, seeks a permit for the single storey building with carparking, landscaping, drive-through lanes and service areas.

The KFC is proposed on a single allotment of land, adjacent to the western side of the Stuart Highway, previously used for a car dealership.

An entry only lane would be located on the Stuart Highway, while an entry and exit is proposed from Ramirez Rd.

“The proposal will reactivate the use and occupation of the subject land, ensuring activity and opportunity for passive surveillance from the external areas, car park, drive-through lanes and from within the building itself,” the proposal reads.

“The proposed building will significantly improve the appearance of the site from the public realm, with the suitable integration of single storey built form, materials and finishes and landscaping.

“The proposed food premises – fast food outlet is consistent with the relevant requirements of the Northern Territory Planning Scheme, has been suitably designed and located to ensure an attractive, safe and function facility.”

The last time a KFC was in the Darwin City region was more than two decades ago, next to the former Red Rooster on the corner of Mitchell and Knuckey streets.

The closest KFC to Darwin City is at Bagot Rd, Coconut Grove.

An NT News survey in June revealed Territorians were keen for a KFC in Stuart Park, Darwin City or Katherine.
