Police have charged a man for driving under the influence in the lead up to a crash which caused the death of a motorcyclist in Palmerston on Thursday.

The 28-year-old driver of a Holden Commodore Sedan allegedly returned a roadside drug test for amphetamine after he collided with a motorcyclist in Moulden about 6.30pm.

A 33-year-old motorcyclist died at the scene after he was thrown from his unregistered bike on the corner of Bonson Tce and De Mestre Cct.

Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said the rider was “under the influence of alcohol” and was “not wearing a helmet at the time of the incident”.

“According to witnesses, he was speeding and unfortunately not wearing a helmet at the time of the incident,” Sergeant Lindner said.

“Major Crash detectives have interviewed a number of witnesses and are continuing the investigation into the crash.”

The 28-year-old driver allegedly left the scene but was found in a nearby area where he returned a positive result for illicit substances.

He was charged with driving under the influence, driving a motor vehicle while unlicensed, driving an unregistered motor vehicle and driving an uninsured motor vehicle.

No charges have been laid in relation to the motorcyclist’s death.

“Further investigation and forensic crash analysis by Major Crash detectives, in consultation with the Director of Public Prosecutions, will determine whether additional charges are laid against the driver,” Sergeant Lindner said.

The man has been issued a notice to appear in court on October 16.
