McArthur River Mine evacuated ahead of Cyclone Trevor

A MAJOR NT mine has shut down and is flying hundreds out of its workers from its facility today in anticipation of Cyclone Trevor

Staff at the McArthur River Mine south of Borroloola have had to evacuate the facility ahead of Cyclone Trevor

THE McArthur River Mine is being evacuated with planes flying hundreds of staff to Darwin.

The mine has temporarily suspended operations as well as operations at the Bing Bong loading facility in anticipation of Tropical Cyclone Trevor’s arrival.

Some 120 staff, including a contingent of senior managers, will remain at the mine to secure the facility.

A spokesman from the mine said the mine’s on-site workforce is generally about 600 people.

Those remaining at the mine have been tasked with “maintaining mine infrastructure and water management”.

“Given the weather in the Territory, the mine has a number of protections and staff are well practised in procedures for significant weather events,” the spokesman added.

The mine, using its on-site airstrip, has been assisting police with the transport of people from Borroloola to Darwin.

The mine is situated 60km south of Borroloola in the east of the Northern Territory.

Borroloola residents have been evacuated from the town, with police advising all residents to leave by Friday morning.

The latest weather reports indicate Tropical Cyclone Trevor will make landfall Saturday morning between Borroloola and the NT/QLD border.
