A woman who defrauded her employer over a “gambling addiction” – according to the judge – has been given a booze ban as part of her home detention order.

Jemylyn Forte Calilan was sentenced to a nine-month intensive community corrections order by way of home detention by Judge David Bamber in Alice Springs on Monday, June 17.

In his sentencing, Judge Bamber detailed how Calilan obtained false medical certificates in order to falsely take time off work.

“This is a matter where the defendant over a considerable period of time basically defrauded her employer by deception, stealing booklets for which she was able to access medical certificates and falsely claim leave on the basis of fraudulent medical certificates, obtaining entitlements as a result,” Judge Bamber said.

“She is a woman of previously good character.

“The offending relates, I’m told, to a gambling addiction.”

Calilan was charged with stealing, forgery and obtaining a benefit by deception.

She pleaded guilty to all charges this year on May 21.

As part of her sentence, Judge Bamber imposed Calilan cannot purchase or consume alcohol or illicit drugs.

She was also ordered to wear an electronic monitoring device, and must stay at an address in Alice Springs.

Judge Bamber described the home detention sentence as “akin to a jail term – instead of going to jail you are restricted to your own home.”

Calilan was in court for sentencing, with two others coming out to support her.
