Gold Coast crime: Teens charged after alleged joyride in stolen VW

Police have accused two teens, 14 and 16, of stealing a VW left parked on the side of the road with the keys still inside.

POLICE have accused two teenagers of stealing a Volkswagen left parked on the side of the road with the keys still inside on the Gold Coast.

Queensland Police have repeatedly warned drivers to lock up their cars and to be careful about where they store their keys in recent times, warning it only takes moments for advantageous thieves to seize on the mistake.

Police officers on routine patrols spotted the stolen VW Passat travelling in the opposite direction on Shoalhaven Ave at Pacific Pines about 8.15pm on Tuesday, a Gold Coast police spokeswoman said.

One of the tyres on the vehicle was deflated, but it's understood the VW was more extensively damaged in a prior crash.

The officers lost sight of the vehicle, before finding it “abandoned in Toohey St” at Pacific Pines.

“Police attended a nearby unit and located a 16-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl,” the spokeswoman alleged.

“The vehicle had been stolen around 3pm on October 24, when it was parked in the front of a house at Bayswater Ave at Varsity Lakes with the car keys inside it, along with a wallet and mobile phone”.

A 16-year-old boy has been charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle and a 14-year-old girl has been charged with receiving tainted property.

They will be dealt with in accordance with the Youth Justice Act.

October 26: Another day, another youth car theft on the Gold Coast.

Gold Coast police have been on the hunt for two children believed to have stolen a grey Kia Stinger and a grey Toyota Prado from a Brighton Pde, Southport address between 11pm on Monday and just before 3.20am on Tuesday.

It comes after a group of youths as young as 12 were charged after a Ford Ranger was stolen from a Coast home and brought to a sudden halt with a tyre deflation device early Monday morning.

The Coast was dubbed “the new Townsville” in an off the cuff comment by a police spokesman, alluding to the north Queensland city’s unenviable reputation as a youth crime hot spot.

In the latest round of offending a “member of the public called police around 3.25am today (Tuesday) after seeing the Kia Stinger parked in a dangerous position on the roadway near Eggersdorf Rd and Creek Rd at Ormeau”, a police spokeswoman said.

It appeared the Kia had been damaged in a crash.

Two juveniles were “observed by the member of the public to flee the vehicle”.

Police investigations were ongoing later on Tuesday morning.

Meanwhile, a home on Chainey Ave at Miami was accessed and the keys to a Ford Ranger were stolen about 1.30am on Monday, the spokeswoman said.

She said the vehicle was allegedly then spotted on Orchid Ave at Surfers Paradise about 20 minutes later.

“A TDD (tyre deflation device) was successfully deployed at Ferny Ave, with the vehicle continuing on eventually being abandoned at Lennie Ave at Main Beach,” the spokeswoman said.

“Police searched the area and located all five (youths) nearby around 2.20am.”

Police have charged a 12-year-old boy with one count each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and burglary.

A 14-year-old boy has been charged with one count each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and burglary and two counts of unlawful possession of suspected stolen property.

A second 14-year-old boy has been charged with one count of with unlawful use of a motor vehicle, while a 15-year-old girl has been charged with one count each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and unlawful possession of suspected stolen property.

Teen ‘car thieves’ tracked down by police chopper

October 13: A pair of teenage boys who were allegedly pursued by a police helicopter and dumped a stolen Audi on the Gold Coast have been charged with car theft offences.

The owner of the Audi stolen in a break-and-enter on Palladium Blvd at Hope Island on Monday sighted the vehicle driving around Pacific Pines about 4.40pm on Tuesday.

Gold Coast police was contacted and officers tried to “cordon the area” before the Audi was spotted leaving Pacific Pines and heading to Coomera on the Pacific Motorway (M1).

It’s alleged a POLAIR helicopter “tracked the vehicle from the sky as it continued to Pimpama” before the chopper crew “observed the vehicle park in Caravan Court with two males fleeing the vehicle”.

“Polair continued to track the offenders running through the streets and police apprehended two boys aged 14 and 15 in Analaby Dr at Pimpama around 5.32pm,” the spokeswoman said.

A 15-year-old boy has been charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, receiving tainted property, supplying dangerous drugs (cannabis) and driving of motor vehicle without a driver’s licence.

The boys were refused police bail and will be dealt with under the Youth Justice Act.
