Penthouse sale smashes QLD auction record

IT’S been revealed a mega-rich co-founder of wildly-popular streetwear and styling company Culture Kings was the mystery cash buyer of the record-breaking Soul penthouse.

Tah-nee Beard, 33, through her company Beard Trading, settled the $15.25m transaction and took possession of the property on June 25.

It was sold by Dane Atherton and Tolemy Stevens from Harcourts Coastal Prestige.

Ms Beard and her husband Simon, who together founded Culture Kings with a single Gold Coast store 13 years ago, earlier this year sold their majority stake in it for $600m.

Online retailer a.k.a Brands plans to expand the business through North America.

The Soul purchase came a year after the couple bought Surfers Paradise mega mansion Riverpoint for $11.75m, which they plan to dramatically expand into the next block to create a Bali-style pool zone.

Riverpoint, which spans three levels, has seven living areas, a theatre, rumpus room, bar, cool room, gymnasium, tennis court and 10-car basement garage.

The house has a private sandy beach, resort-style pool and lush gardens.

Ms Beard is also the listed owner of a six-bedroom, $3.3m riverfront mansion set on a 4161 sqm estate at Ashmore.

There were just five registered bidders for the Soul penthouse, three in-person and two by phone. The successful bidder was on the phone.

It was understood to be the first private auction conducted in Queensland where it was only registered parties in attendance.

The price fell short of the Australian record of $20m, paid for a unit in Bondi that sold earlier this year.

The penthouse occupies levels 70 to 73 of the Soul tower in Surfers Paradise.

It has five bedrooms including a master suite with his and hers walk-in wardrobes and powder rooms, dining and sitting rooms, two lounges, study, kitchen, butler’s pantry, cigar lounge and bar.

A fireplace on level 71 required engineering approvals before installation.

The unit had been valued at $20 million and was sold by Sydney-based Andrew Koloadin who bought it from Hong Kong tycoon Tony Fung for $6.5m in 2018.

Mr Koloadin told the Bulletin in March he had put his “heart and soul” into the project.

In 2014, the penthouse was stripped back to a concrete shell for its marketing campaign and sold to Mr Fung for $7m the following year.

It was originally bought off the plan by Charlie Caltibiano for $16.85m.

However, the sale was not finalised and he never moved in following a court dispute which he lost.

The building was developed by Juniper Property Holdings and went into receivership with debts to creditors of almost $700 million in late 2012.
