DARWIN has pulled off a coup with global tropical fashion brand Tommy Bahama opening a store in the Darwin Mall at the end of this month.
Tommy Bahama is a leading seller of island lifestyles and maker of trendy lifestyle clothing and accessories.
The clothing is inspired by the relaxed sophistication of coastal living and the range includes casual, men’s and women’s sportswear and activewear, denim, swimwear and accessories.
It will take over two Paspaley shopping spaces alongside RM Williams and opposite Cafe 21. There are more than 160 company-owned Tommy Bahama retail stores worldwide. Australia has a string of them on the east coast from Cairns to Noosa, the Gold Coast, Byron Bay, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.
Tommy Bahama Australia director Tom Cross said the company had picked Darwin as its latest location because it had confidence in Darwin as an emerging market.
“We have a lot of confidence in Darwin in terms of a tourist destination and the place to be from a business point of view,” Mr Cross said.
“Darwin is really gaining momentum. Our fashion range is a good fit with Darwin and its tropical climate … live the island lifestyle is what we are all about.
“It’s light, its comfortable and it’s coastal. We are delighted to be coming to Darwin, it’s something that has been on our radar for a while.
“We see Darwin as very brand appropriate for our clothing with its fantastic climate, relaxed lifestyle which suits our brand perfectly.”

Colliers International Darwin general manager Chris Hyland said the arrival of Tommy Bahama in Darwin was a sign of confidence in the local economy. “To have a successful company of this calibre pick Darwin for one of its stores speaks volumes,’’ Mr Hyland said. “It is definitely a sign of confidence in the Territory. It is a trend we are seeing far more of. There is a renewed confidence. The mood is certainly stronger.
“The savvy investors are noticing that we are moving on to a new era post Inpex and are looking to a growth area here that is attractive for investment.
“If we can attract more operators to Darwin it creates more vibrancy and it adds to the confidence in our community.”
