Firefighters battle to contain new blaze at Adelaide River under extreme weather conditions

THE Stuart Highway has been closed as a bushfire has jumped the highway at Adelaide River and there are fears it will spread north to neighbouring properties

UPDATE: The Stuart Hwy has been closed from Adelaide River to 10km north of the township after a bushfire at Strickland Rd crossed from the east side to the West side of the road.

However Bushfires NT Incident controller said burnt land on the west side of the highway meant its spread wasn’t the biggest concern for crews.

“What we’re more concerned about is properties lying on the east side as strong winds will push it to the north,” he said.

The Watch and Act advice urges residents to take action to protect their families and properties.

Mr Fischer said a number of authority bodies were working together to help contain the blaze.

“Police are in attendance and traffic controllers are en route,” he said.

“We have aircraft working in the area to assist ground crews who are still arriving from other fire grounds.”

Meanwhile, a fire which threatened homes and properties in Darwin River on Tuesday and Wednesday is under control.

“At this point we’ve still got crews there monitoring the fire to ensure no flare-ups through the height of the day,” Mr Fischer said.

“There’s piles of vegetation burning, they will continue to burn for some time.

“Our crews are monitoring the situation and will respond as necessary.”

EARLIER: A fire has started along Strickland Rd in Adelaide River with firefighters advising residents and motorists to be careful and to take safety measures.

Bushfires NT have warned motorists to be careful as firefighting crews may be working close to the road and to be aware that “active fire may occur close to the roadside”, and

smoke from the fires could affect visibility.
