A man has died after a head-on collision with a truck on the Stuart Highway on Sunday afternoon.

At 4.50pm on Sunday emergency services received reports of a collision between a road train and a Honda CRV about 14km north of Katherine.

First responders attended the crash and the 23-year-old Honda driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 58-year-old driver of the road train was assessed for minor injuries, and later taken to Katherine Hospital for blood testing.

Both drivers were the only occupants in their vehicles.

The Stuart Highway was closed in both directions on Sunday while Major Crash investigated the scene.

It was reopened nearly 12 hours later at 4.30am on Monday.

Investigations are ongoing and detectives from Major Crash Investigation Unit urge anyone with information about the incident or who may have dashcam footage to make contact on 131 444, quoting reference number P25200551.

This latest fatality brings the total lives lost on Territory roads to 24, compared to 40 at the same time last year.

The 2024 road toll was the worst in 16 years, leading Deputy Chief Minister Gerard Maley to label the tragic figure a “national disgrace”.
