A man in custody on an attempted murder charge has been identified as a former body builder.

A man in court over a number of charges, including attempted murder, has been identified as a former professional body builder.

Bruce-Lee Arthur King appeared in Darwin Local Court on Wednesday charged with intend serious harm, cause any harm, going armed in public and attempted murder after being arrested in relation to a brawl in Karama in November last year.

At the time, NT Police said a number of males were involved in a “large disturbance”, with some armed with “poles and edged weapons”.

Two males were taken to Darwin Royal Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

King appeared via video link in court where his lawyer Robert Welfare told the court he hoped to resolve the charges with the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in the coming weeks.

“If it’s possible, we would like to come back next Wednesday and it might all just disappear,” Mr Welfare said.

King’s social media profile shows him as a younger man posing for a number of photos in Calvin Klein underwear.

According to a 2002 online article on Deadly Vibe, an Aboriginal media, public relations and events group of companies, Katherine-born Bruce-Lee King was “one of the only Aboriginal body builder competing at the elite level in Australia”.

The article stated King was presented an award for most outstanding achievement at the 2001 International Federation of Body Building (IFBB) Australian Championships.

“I want to be the best body builder in Australia within five years,” King was quoted as saying in the article.

“Within seven to 10 years I’d like to be the best body builder ever in Australia.

“There’s a lot of opportunity for me, being the only Indigenous person in the arena.

“I want to promote myself as a complete package, portraying an image of Aboriginal success and achievement to the mainstream.”

The article said King had played state representative league, union and touch football, as well as worked as a health promotions officer in Tennant Creek.

“Clearly, Bruce-Lee’s heart is in community,” it said.

According to the article, at the age of 10, King was “smoking cigarettes and marijuana, and stealing drinks”.

King was arrested in relation to the assault on November 1 last year, along with a 19-year-old man and a 20-year-old man.

King’s co-accused, Stacey Clarke, was excused from appearing in the Darwin Local Court on Wednesday.

His lawyer, Storm Lawlor, told the court there were “some prospects of resolution”.

King was remanded in custody until November 9, when he will reappear in court for a preliminary examinations mention.

Clarke will reappear in court on the same day.
