THE red light/speed camera at the corner of Ross Smith Ave and the Stuart Hwy was the Territory’s top earner in 2017-18 raking in at least $214,900 from lead-footed drivers.

The camera pinged more than 2000 motorists last financial year, or 17 per cent of the 12,829 fines issued from fixed cameras throughout Darwin and Alice Springs, adding a minimum of more than $1.2 million to Territory coffers.

The next best performing money spinner was the camera at the intersection of Westralia St and the Stuart Hwy which cashed in at least $206,600 in fines.

The outbound lane at the intersection with Girraween Rd hosted the third costliest snapper, collecting at least $130,800 from drivers who did not follow the rules.

The cameras record speeding and traffic light offences, with fines ranging from between $100 for running a yellow to $1000 for high range speeding, so the actual dollar figures could be much higher depending on the infraction.

Alice Springs’ two fixed cameras caught out 588 drivers last financial year while fixed and mobile cameras busted more than 27,000 speedsters throughout the NT in 2018.

That figure was up on the previous year when 22,557 speeding fines were issued from mobile and fixed cameras, while red light infringements fell from 6004 to 5347.

A spokesman for the Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics said 5558 of the total fines issued from fixed cameras last financial year were traffic light related and 7271 were speed related.

“The cameras are placed in locations of high crash risk,” he said.

“This is generally intersections with high volumes of traffic or other risk factors with known crash history.”

NT Police road policing commander, Matthew Hollamby, said Territorians were “much safer with speed limits and traffic lights than without them”.

“Our 2018 road toll was appalling and speeding was one of several contributing factors to the high number of deaths we saw,” he said.

“We encourage motorists to obey the speed limits because it makes our roads safer and you can avoid the risk of receiving a fine.”

Commander Hollamby said police were urging all road users to follow the rules, for their own safety and that of the community.

“Nobody intends to have a crash but they can easily be caused by split-second lapses in judgment,” he said.

The Territory’s road toll stands at six, one more than at the same time during a horror 2018 when 50 people were killed on the road.
