More than 800 Territorians owe the public coffers more than $10 million in unpaid fines

THERE are more than 800 Territorians who each owe taxpayers more than $10,000 in unpaid fines.

The latest data from the Territory Government shows Katherine tyre firm Gibbo’s Tyres are the worst offender, who owe the public purse $144,231.

In March last year, the business was fined $142,000 after a two year old boy was killed at their workplace.

Gibbo’s Tyres pleaded guilty in October 2017 to two breaches of the Work Health and Safety (National Uniform Legislation) Act.

The company breached Section 32 for failing to comply with a health and safety duty, and breached Section 38 for failing to notify a notifiable incident.

On November 19, 2015, the family of the deceased child went to the tyre firm to have a tyre replaced on their vehicle.

The family waited outside on the business premises for the work to be completed. During this time, the child and his three-year-old cousin wandered over to an area of the workplace to play where eight unsecured truck tyres were leaning upright against a wall.

The child was found by his family under one of the tyres, which weighed approximately 90kg. He died later that night as a result of head injuries he had sustained.

Other serial fine offenders are Henry Paddy from Katherine who owes Territory coffers $48,333 while Darren Stewart from Humpty Doo owes $42,512.

Former travel agent Tenille Foley from Katherine still owes $37,966.

The total of unpaid fines owed by people/companies who owe more than $10,000 equals $10.483 million.
