Like any determined skater who takes a tumble, the owners of Cre8ive Sk8 have dusted themselves off and gotten on with the job of relocating their store to a new location after being hit twice by ram raiders in a week.
Specialised skate shop Cre8ive Sk8 was founded by keen skateboarder and street luge rider Adrian Alderson at Ross River Rd, Aitkenvale in 1999, after he noticed a gap in the market.
Renowned for having the largest selection in North Queensland, the business sells skateboards, longboards and cruisers, scooters, in-line and quad skates, art supplies, e-scooters, e-skateboards, and protective gear.
The store acted like a magnet for lifelong skating enthusiast and veteran Nick Wilson, who spent almost three years volunteering at the business after being medically discharged from his combat engineer role with the army in 2021.
“I was just helping him out, giving me something to do to keep my mind occupied and then it got the point where Adrian was retiring, so he asked if (me and my wife Femke) wanted the shop, so we decided to buy it off him (in October 2023),” Mr Wilson said.
“We’re basically the only dedicated skate shop in Townsville … so we pride ourselves on having products that you can’t get anywhere else.
“We’ve turned to stocking a lot of E scooters because it’s a trend at the moment, and they’re quite good.”
He said people from all walks of life were jumping on the e-scooter bandwagon, from surgeons right through to the young criminals who had increasingly targeted the store since he started stocking them.
Since they began offering repairs and servicing, he said business had become busier and busier, to the point where they were now “flat out” and needing a larger premises.
Following their brushes with crime, the business expedited its relocation plans to reopen at 15-17 Hammett St, Currajong in early December.
“Christmas time is always good. We get a lot of kids in and are getting them on the boards, which I used to do when I was little, so it’s close to my heart, so to speak,” he said.
“We’re here for the community. We sponsor the roller derby people, give prizes for school competitions, and try to do as much as we can to help everyone out … and it’s going good.”
