Eight councillors have walked into the latest Alice Springs Town Council meeting, but nine councillors have walked out – with the newest councillor hoping his blue collar background brings a fresh perspective.
Chris Daffy has been appointed to fill a councillor role left vacant since March, with Mr Daffy officially appointed on November 1.
Mr Daffy was chosen in a closed door process at the October 29 ordinary council meeting.
Starting out as an apprentice, Mr Daffy is now an electrical supervisor at Morton Brothers Contracting, making him the second sparky on council.
Born and raised in Alice Springs, he said it was the second time he’d put his name forward for council, and now he is looking forward to getting started.
“I actually was originally applying for it three years ago when the original council was appointed,” he said.
“So we got to the election and it was just trying to work out whether it would fit in without putting too much pressure on my wife.”
A father to two children, Mr Daffy said he put his political aspirations on hold until the vacancy became available on council.
“All I know is there was 11 of us that went in for it and yeah, I was lucky enough to come away with the position,” he said.
Alice Springs Town Council Mayor Matt Paterson – also a sparky – said Mr Daffy’s appointment would help council build towards “a bright future”.
“Chris brings with him a wealth of experience, enthusiasm, and a strong connection to our community,” he said.
“I’m confident he shares our vision of creating connections within our community and will make a valuable contributions to our discussions.”
Mr Daffy fills the councillor role left vacant by Steve Brown’s retirement in March.
Mr Brown cited health and personal reasons as to why he stepped down from council.
