A trio of talented Territory hockey guns are jetting off to Europe this week as part of the 2025 under-16s Joeys tour.
Niesha Casimiro, Charlie Beath and Maya Nunn will represent Australia in a week-long tournament against Belgium, Ireland, Scotland, France and England from April 9 to 24.
All members of the DHL, the three are chomping at the bit, ready to test their skills in unfamiliar territory.
Nightcliff Tigers’ Charlie Beath, the lone male selected from the NT, is eager to see how he shapes up against international competitors while hoping to hone his skills in the process.
“Belgium are the big guys (in hockey) at the moment so it’s going to be really exciting having a chance to play them, as well as face off against different nations,” Beath said.
“We know that there are a lot of talented juniors and some great coaches so hopefully if I can get some tips and tricks and learn from them I’ll be able to add that to my game and improve.
And while he and his side have yet to train together, Beath believes the Aussies will be tough to beat.
“We haven’t trained yet but the side is all guys I’ve played against over the years at nationals, so they’re all quite talented,” he said.
“I’m pretty confident that we’ll be competitive.”
The teenager is also over the moon to be able to play alongside her best friend in national colours.
“I’m going to use this to learn from others and those outside of the NT and Aussie hockey (sphere),” Nunn said.
“Obviously I want to have some fun as well and win some games too.
“Hopefully I’ll get to play in the midfield or halfback as those are my strongest positions but I’ll adapt to whatever role I’m tasked with.
“Honestly, I’m super excited that I get to have this opportunity alongside my bestie (Casimiro) and I’m very proud to be representing the nation.”
Commerce-Pints star Casimiro, like her peers, will use this tour as a chance to test herself against some of the best up-and-coming talents in the world.
“Europe will be great for all of us as they play a different style of hockey to us,” Casimiro said.
“So to challenge myself against some of the best juniors and nations in the world is something I’m looking forward to.
“Playing for the Stingers I feel is something that’s given me a bit more confidence (in my game).
“Also, getting to play against people our age and now women will also make it a more level playing field that I’m keen for.”
For Casimiro, the chance to travel to the other side of the world with her ‘bestie’ can’t be topped.
“It’s so cool we both made the team,” she said,
“Getting to play with her (Nunn) and travel with her makes this so much better.
“I still remember when we told each other we made the team and she screamed so loud.”
