NT Police allege the man first threw rocks at her from a distance before he approached her and punched her in the face, knocking the woman out.

The man allegedly began stomping on her head and chest as she laid unconscious.

Southern Watch Commander Marc Watson said the man was chased away by bystanders a short time later.

The woman was taken to hospital in a stable condition with non-life threatening injuries.

Mr Watson said the man was arrested close to the incident location, and has since been charged with aggravated assault.

Mr Watson said the woman indicated she wanted to leave Alice Springs “as soon as possible”.

“It was a shocking unprovoked incident that no one should be subjected to,” he said.

The man was set to appear in Alice Springs Local Court on Wednesday however it is understood his matter was not mentioned.

“The woman was allegedly assaulted in a horrifying and senseless act in broad daylight,” he said.

“Violence of any kind has no place in our communities.

“It is completely unacceptable that anyone should be subjected to such a traumatic experience.

“Our thoughts are with the victim as she recovers in hospital.

“We thank [NT] Police for their swift response arresting the alleged offender.

“Everyone deserves to feel safe.”

Tourism Central Australia chief executive Daniel Rochford said he was saddened by the incident.

“Like everyone in the Alice community, we’re saddened by this incident and we hope the young woman has a swift recovery,” he said.

“I know our community will come together to offer as much support and care as possible to her and her family.”

Mr Rochford was sought for further comment by this masthead about the impact the incident may have on tourism in the Red Centre, but he is yet to respond.
