POLICE have arrested a 32-year-old man and a 14-year-old girl after they allegedly assaulted police in separate incidents in Alice Springs.

In the first alleged assault, officers arrested the man for breaching a court order at about 5pm on Thursday and took him to prison where he allegedly kicked a police officer in the leg.

He was charged with assaulting police and issued with a summons to appear in court.

Then at about 9pm, a foot patrol in the central business district spotted a group of youths, one of whom was in breach of her bail conditions.

As police tried to arrest the 14-year-old, she allegedly resisted and spat in one officer’s face before being taken to the Alice Springs watch house.

She is due to face court on July 6.

Acting commander Brett Prowse said the incidents provoked “a simple question for Territorians”.

“Is it ever acceptable for an employee to be spat on and kicked in the workplace? Of course not,” he said.

“While the vast majority of Territorians understand and value the difficult work undertaken by NT Police officers in keeping Territorians safe every day of the year, it is evident there is still a small number of people who think this kind of violent and disgusting behaviour is acceptable.

“Let me be clear, it never has been and never will be acceptable.”
