PARRTJIMA festival goers are set for a treat when talented apprentice chef, Aboriginal woman Shaikhani Fewings comes to town to cook up a storm.
Every year, Crown Melbourne’s Indigenous Employment Program (IEP) provides sustainable employment opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.
This year, the program has seen culinary specialist Shaikhani selected to cook and participate in the upcoming festival which runs from April 8-18 and features light installations from a number of Aboriginal artists set in Desert Park.

As part of the celebrations, Shaikhani will be plating up a native canape menu featuring Indigenous ingredients, and will have further dishes featured within the nightly Dessert Stall and Café. Think Kangaroo sausage rolls with native bush tomato relish, and Cinnamon myrtle pavlova, with mango, finger lime and raspberries.

Shakhani joined Crown Melbourne’s award-winning Indigenous Education Program (IEP) in 2018. She works as part of Crown Melbourne’s Grade Banquets Team, and uses her culinary skills to deliver a premium food offering for guests.
