ALICE Springs could soon be home to a new youth programs hub and community space after Alice Springs Town Council announced they would repair and fit out an unused building for “community and youth initiatives”.

Councillors voted to apply to the NT Government to lease the old Tourism Central Australia building at 28 Gregory Terrace building for 25 years for no rent, during the council’s ordinary meeting on Wednesday.

It comes after council building windows were smashed this week prior to the meeting.

Mayor Damien Ryan told ABC radio he thought it was “a great outcome”.

He said the town could use the building for a many different events like Masters Games and Parrtijima.

“The next step is to sign a lease at multiple years at no rent so then it becomes our place,” he said.

It is noted that the building “requires significant repairs” due to neglect and vandalism, which would cost up to an estimated $350,000 in repairs and fit out.

A report reveals the building has a kitchenette and amenities, as well as several office spaces and an enclosed outside area.

“Council will be able to turn the lot into a welcoming and safe space that can be utilised to best suit the community of Alice Springs,” it reads.
