Being out of jail needs to be ‘more attractive’ to youth

ALICE Springs could soon be home to a new youth programs hub and community space after a report revealed Alice Springs Town Council is prepared to drop a “significant investment” to show a commitment to “addressing current community and youth initiatives”.

The report revealed the council intends to fix and refurbish the old Tourism Central Australia building at 28 Gregory Terrace and use it as a youth and community space.

It is noted council will apply to the Territory government seek a lease of 25 years for no rent.

The council approached the government in September 2020 regarding the use of the site and were advised in February 2021 to apply for the release of the site.

Councillors will vote on whether to do so in a general meeting on Wednesday night.

It is noted that the building “requires significant repairs” due to neglect and vandalism, which would cost up to an estimated $350,000 in repairs and fit out.

“The building is structurally sound and has a kitchenette and amenities, as well as several office spaces and an enclosed outside area. There is ample space available that can be used to offer both community and youth programs,” the report reads.

“Council also has the opportunity to offer front counter space to organisations hosting events to use the space as an information centre for the public, for example Masters Games, Parrtjima etc.

“It gives council the opportunity to lease a centrally located building for nil rental that can be used to expand community and youth offerings.

“As council will be responsible for repairs and refurbishment, it gives council the opportunity to treat the building as a blank canvas.

“Council will be able to turn the lot into a welcoming and safe space that can be utilised to best suit the community of Alice Springs.”

The report notes the building was previously mooted as a location for the Library’s Satellite Youth Tech Hub.
