THE $13 million rebuild of Tennant Creek’s IGA supermarket will start soon with contracts awarded to local construction companies after the store was destroyed in a fire last year.
Alice Springs company Asbuild has been awarded the main contract for construction and fit-
out of the store.
CEO of IBA Retail Asset Management (IRAM – who manages the store), John Kop said they put the work out to tender with four Territory companies.
“Asbuild impressed us with its strong history of construction and fit out of multimillion-dollar commercial and public buildings throughout Central Australia,” Mr Kop said.
“Director and Construction Manager Paul Graham also demonstrated a strong commitment to
using Tennant Creek subcontractors and Aboriginal workers,” he said.
Tennant Creek company Dexter Barnes won a contract to demolish much of the damaged
supermarket: taking off the roof, removing walls and stripping the insides of the building.
“Russell O’Donnell from Dexter Barnes also voluntarily removed caballing and refrigeration
copper coils from the building and refrigeration system.
“He will recycle the copper coils and donate the money raised to a local charity to be nominated by the store’s partnership board,” Mr Kop said.

The refrigeration contract was awarded to South Australian firm Amertec Refrigeration, who
will in turn engage Dexter Barnes as a subcontractor.
Amertec will train Dexter Barnes to provide technical support and after services for the refrigeration system.
“Refrigeration is a critical part of the store’s infrastructure,” Mr Kop said.
“So having local technical support will be good for Dexter Barnes and a safeguard for IGA should anything require urgent attention.”
“In addition to these contracts, there will be a substantial local spend on things like hardware,
skip bins, food, accommodation and fuel during construction,” Mr Kop said.
“This will be a big boost to the Barkly region and the local economy.”

The tenders were awarded after several months of preliminary works, including architectural
design, engineering and quantity surveying.
The IGA store was burnt down in July last year, and forced the supermarket to operate
out of an emergency relief store next to the BP service station.
Sub-contracts have been awarded by Asbuild to T J Contractors, Barkly Plumbing Services, Tennant Creek and Remote Concrete in Tennant Creek and Roger Harris Painting and Ronin Security Technologies, Alice Springs.
