THE Tennant Creek IGA is introducing in-store specials as they expand their temporary store following a fire on July 12 that destroyed the town’s only supermarket, resulting in more than $1.6m in damages.
After community upset about the lack of specials with the new stock, following a community survey by the IGA, owned by Julalikari Aboriginal Corporation, the store is offering an expanded range and in-store specials this week.
IRAM (the organisation managing the IGA) chief executive John Kop said additional shelving could see the range increase to 4600 items, which was nearly half of what was stocked at the former site.

“We are installing a new dairy cool room and freezer to help us keep up with sales of chilled product,” Mr Kop said.
“All supermarket pricing and specials at the temporary store apply at the BP service station, where people have 24-hour access to goods normally sold at convenience store prices.
“Based on feedback to our recent survey, we have reduced the price of roast chickens at the BP service station from $15 to $12, which is close to cost price.”
IRAM has improved access and safety at the temporary store, as well as engaging with several consultancies to redesign and redevelop the permanent IGA site.
“As we get closer to moving back, we will seek community input on our range,” Mr Kop said.
