A teenager has been granted bail a day after her arrest over an alleged stabbing attack on two girls at a dog park which a top cop said “could have been a homicide”.

A 15-year-old Yorkeys Knob girl was charged after two teenage girls – understood to be friends – were allegedly stabbed while walking their dog in a park in Smithfield on Monday night.

Police said a male family member of the younger teenager was also allegedly assaulted during the incident, after coming to assist the pair.

On Tuesday night, police arrested a 15-year-old Yorkeys Knob girl in Redlynch in connection and charged her with one count each of grievous bodily harm, common assault, assault occasioning bodily harm and serious assault public officer.

Acting Inspector Jason Chetham said the incident could have “very easily been a homicide”.

“About 6.30pm at Rainy Mountain Park Smithfield last Monday night, we had a 17-year old and 18-year-old walking their dog in the park there,” Inspector Chetham said.

“They were subject to verbal abuse by another group of teenagers.

“They (the girls) called for some help – pick up from their parents – and when they arrived, the situation became physical.”

The alleged victims managed to leave and went home before calling for an ambulance.

Both girls were allegedly wounded in the course of the altercation, with one of the girls sustaining a severe injury to the abdomen and a punctured lung, Inspector Chetham said.

A CHHHS spokeswoman confirmed the 18-year-old who was admitted in critical condition, was now in stable condition.

According to Inspector Chetham, the two girls and the group of teenagers were known to each other from the local area, and at the moment there was no established motive for the alleged incident.

A man close to the 17-year-old described it as a “vicious” attack.

“She got stabbed in the bicep and her friend got stabbed in the chest, missing her heart by just 4cm apparently,” the man said.

“(She) rang her mother for help and the parents got bashed – they went to help, and they got bashed as well.”

Inspector Chetham said that as a result of investigations into the alleged stabbing, police had identified the 15-year-old as being allegedly responsible for a separate assault on a Sunbus driver on Sunday evening.

“We have seized the knife and forensics is trying to determine if that was the weapon used but any instance where people have weapons out in public is a cause for concern for police and government services at the moment,” Inspector Chetham said.

“It was a very serious incident up there.

“At the moment, there is a real focus on bladed weapons in public places and the fact they really aggravate altercations that take place – this could have easily been a homicide up there so it’s very lucky.”

Three to four more teenagers were part of the offending group but no other charges have been laid by police.

Investigations are continuing and anyone with information or who might have been witness to the incident is being urged to come forward to help the investigation, quoting case number QP2301133736.
