A 13-year-old boy has been charged after he allegedly stabbed a man in the stomach after an argument on a Cairns bus.

A 13-year-old boy has been charged after he allegedly stabbed a man on a Cairns bus after the man intervened in an argument between the boy and the bus driver.

Detectives from Cairns Child Protection and Investigation Unit have charged the Bentley Park boy after the alleged wounding in Cairns City.

Around 6pm yesterday a man intervened in an argument between a bus driver and two teenagers while the bus was stopped on Lake Street.

The 26-year-old man then took a seat on the bus before one of the teenagers allegedly approached him and stabbed him in the stomach.

The teenagers fled the scene but were tracked by Cairns dog squad to an address in Parramatta Park where they were arrested a short time later.

The 26-year-old male was taken to Cairns Hospital for treatment of a minor laceration and was subsequently released.

The 13-year-old Bentley Park boy has been charged with one count each of wounding and common assault.

His bail was refused and he will appear at Cairns Childrens Court.
