A Queensland teenager who stands accused of stabbing another student at a school is preparing to seek release from custody.

Marc Rajan Taylor, 18, appeared at Cairns Magistrates Court on Wednesday and was charged with the attempted murder of a fellow 18-year-old student.

The victim’s identity remains protected.

The incident occurred during a morning break on Tuesday at Peace Lutheran College, in Kamerunga, when Taylor allegedly approached the victim while she was sitting with friends.

Police will allege he then stabbed her multiple times.

Quick action from students and staff resulted in Taylor being restrained, while the injured young woman was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. She is scheduled to undergo surgery on Wednesday.

“It was a school break, but there wasn‘t a large group of people around. I would imagine for the whole school body, even just learning about it, it’s a pretty horrific event to happen anywhere, let alone a school ground,” Detective Acting Inspector Jason Chetham said.

The crime scene was secured, and a knife was recovered at the location.

The school assured that support is being offered to affected students and expressed its concern.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with all members of our community during this difficult time,” the school said in a statement.

“The safety and wellbeing of all members of our community is our highest priority. We ask the community to keep our injured student in their prayers.”
