A Cairns woman is excited to quit one of her jobs after scoring $1.4m on the Lotto

A Cairns woman is looking forward to quitting one of her jobs and paying off her house after winning a bumper prize of $1.4m on the Lotto.

Cairns’ latest millionaire confessed she couldn’t wait to take her foot off the pedal and work a little less after winning more than $1.4m in last weekend’s lotto.

The lottery winner held one of the 14 division one winning entries in the Gold Lotto on Saturday, May 13.

“I’m still in shock. I can’t believe it,” she said, after an official from The Lott confirmed her win.

“I’m going to quit one of my jobs.

“I feel like a weight has just been lifted from my shoulders.”

In light of sky high interest rates and the “tough” cost-of-living crunch, the winner said the win was going to be a huge help and would change her family’s lives.

“I can pay off my house.”

Her winning ticket was purchased at the NewsXpress in Cairns Central, where staff were thrilled for their victorious customer.

The team said they were over the moon for her and her family and wished them all the best for the future.

The win comes after a Cairns resident had won more than $1m at the Stratford General Store, but never claimed their prize, forcing the store owner to put out a notice in search of the mystery winner.

Across Australia, there were 14 division one winning entries in the Saturday’s Gold Lotto draw – four each in Western Australia and New South Wales and three each in Queensland and Victoria.

In 2023, there have been three winners from the Cairns region so far – one from Mareeba and two from Cairns – and five major lottery wins in total from North Queensland, collectively worth more than $3,682,167.66 in prize money.
