While Melburnians ran for cover from the pouring rain and icy temperatures, Territorians watching the race that stops the nation at home sweltered through another day of one of the Top End’s worst heatwaves in recent memory.
Phillip Roberton, who is holidaying in Darwin from Melbourne, watched the Melbourne Cup at Berry Springs, which was set for a blistering maximum temperature of 38C.
“It’s a bit warm but I’m getting used to it now,” Mr Roberton said.
“I’d take it any day.”
But it’ll be worth it to see the iconic crocodile race, Mr Roberton said.
“It’ll be a good day,” he said.
Mr Robertson has cooled off during the heatwave with a dip at the waterfront almost every day of his holiday as the Territory has sweated through harsh temperatures day after day.
On Sunday, the Bureau of Meteorology issued a heatwave warning for parts of the NT, with an extreme heatwave warning for the Arnhem District and a severe warning for the Daly, Tiwi, Carpentaria and Gregory Districts.
The warning is valid from Sunday through to Wednesday.
Sally Cutter from the Bureau of Meteorology said the hot weather would continue in Darwin on Wednesday with a chance of some showers and storms tomorrow and Thursday.
“We are looking at the heatwave continuing for at least another day,” she said.
“It is easing off in a number of the districts but we are expecting to see a return in a few days’ time.
“We’re going to see an increase in showers and storms and then we’ll see all those showers and storms ease off over the weekend.”
But Ms Cutter said it may be short lived.
“We’ll see the heatwave redeveloping later in the week,” she said.
“Most of the showers and storms will occur on Wednesday and Thursday.”
