“Gauge your limitations and experiment with subjects, experiment with new things.”
As the Territory’s highest-achieving student of 2023, Al-Hussain Al-Ibrahim is in the best position to reveal the best tips and tricks to ace the final year of school.
Mr Al-Ibrahim on Monday received a perfect ATAR score of 99.95 and said the result was a huge relief.
“It just felt so fulfilling and rewarding at the same time, and I’m still in disbelief,” he said.
“I did English (literary studies), mathematics methods, specialist mathematics, physics, chemistry, and I did Stage 2 Japanese last year.
“I enjoyed all the subjects that I chose, and I definitely did what I was most comfortable with.”
Incoming Year 12 students are often advised to do the subjects they enjoy in order to succeed, but Mr Al-Ibrahim had an additional nugget of advice.
The Darwin High School graduate – who hopes to study medicine at Monash University – said students often overlooked their Year 10 and 11 years when they could be capitalising on them.
“During these two years … experiment with new things and how you study and your lifestyle and sort of work out a balance for yourself,” Mr Al-Ibrahim said.
“See how long you can study for, that type of thing.
“Then you can go into Year 12 really knowing yourself very well and you’ll be able to tackle your study and you’re able to do it really well because you know your limits.”
