The options are contained in a preliminary assessment document that was released in February highlighting the current water supply system in Darwin will need to be increased in the future to meet forecasted social and economic growth.

Territorians interested in the options and the future needs of the Darwin region’s water supply, have until 8am Monday to make your feelings known about two short-listed options.

OPTION 1: Adelaide River Off-stream Water Storage (AROWS) and Manton Dam Return to Service (RTS) which can provide water for a range of use over the next 50 plus years;

OPTION 2: Desalination and recycled water which can enable industry development in the short term (up to 10 years) at the proposed Middle Arm Sustainable Development Precinct.

Industry, Tourism and Trade Department chief executive officer Shaun Drabsch said increasing water supply would be critical for the Territory and Darwin to achieve a $40bn economy by 2030.

“The Darwin region water supply is currently operating at, or above its sustainable supply level and cannot grow without an additional water supply,” he said.

“This have your say process is an important part of developing solutions to these challenges. I urge Territorians to share their feedback.”
