Footage captured at a Costco in East London on Sunday showed dozens of shopping trolleys loaded up with packs of water that had 40 bottles inside.

The huge packs were selling for £6 (AU $12.60). The crowd were jam-packed into the area of the bulk-buy supermarket that featured drinks in a bid to score a slab.

People struggled to make their way through the crowd to get close to the bottled water.

The UK is in the midst of a heatwave, regularly experiencing 30°C temperatures without any rainfall. It’s unusual for the country that is known to experience rain no matter the time of year.

“I went for a regular monthly shop,” one onlooker told What’s The Jam.

“But so many people were crowded by the water section trying to grab them. People were grabbing it off the pallet trucks while the workers were distributing it out.”

Social media users had a huge reaction to the scene that unfolded, with many comparing it to the panic buying of toilet paper in 2020.

“Toilet paper, Don’t forget the toilet paper,” one said.

Another added: “I buy over 40 cases of water from Costco a week for my business.”

“Costco need to start closing doors for this, panic buying for nothing,” one said.

Another social media user added: “We all have perfectly safe drinking water from the TAP.”

“Reminds me of 5 years ago,” another said.

One user added: “Is Covid-19 again why everyone rushing?”

“Ah, covid all over again. Panic buying, fear and debt,” one said,

Someone else pointed out: “Since Covid, every time I grocery shop or go to the grocery store for even the smallest thing, I always get a case of water. I also buy extra toilet paper and paper towels. My Garage is like a Costco that holds water, paper towel and toilet paper.”

“Thank goodness I don’t have this stress. I have filter jug,” one said.

Another added: “Nothing wrong with this. People need to stay hydrated lol.”
