Sydney bakery divides customers over sky-high price of meat pie

It even has a 'chimney' to pour sauce through. So, how much would you pay for this innovation?

Cheeseburger and chip pie

A Sydney bakery has stirred up a storm of opinions with its latest offering — a meat pie with a staggering price tag.

Lode Pies and Pastries in Surry Hills has given the classic Aussie staple a gourmet twist, and it takes them three days to make.

It features layers of flaky pastry and a filling of wagyu beef, carrot and shiitake mushrooms.

To top it all off, the pie features a 'chimney' which customers can pour chicken sauce through.

People can get their hands on one of these bad boys for a cool $20, that is, if they can wait out the massive queues outside.

#Piegate: How much would you pay?

While some social media users stand by the bakery and say they're willing to pay for the luxury item, others are balking at the thought of spending that much on what is traditionally a cheap servo snack.

One customer, Chris, kicked off the debate when he posted about the pie in a popular Facebook group, saying: "I think I've found the most expensive pie in New South Wales."

The post was then inundated with comments from those saying it was a massive rip-off.

"I want the hand of the Good Lord himself to have rolled the pastry before I pay $20 for a pie," one Aussie quipped.

"Fools and money! Looks too burnt for me," someone else pointed out.

"Tried it last year... tastes pretty good, a bit gimmicky if I'm being honest. Would prefer a chunky steak and pepper pie," a third admitted.

"Dude, I refuse even to pay that much for a family pie," one sceptical man wrote.

"Well worth it"

However, others were more enthusiastic, with one even saying it was a "work of art" and that everyone was simply "missing the point."

"I can see why it's $20, the way all the pastry is set would take ages," one fan noted.

"This is my local and it's one of the best pies you'll have in your life. Fluffy pastry perfection and the filling is amazing," another happy customer shared.

"Wow! Just look at that thing of beauty," one replied.

Another mentioned that it could be worth it if it filled you up like a meal would.

"Considering you pay $20+ for a trendy burger and a small side of fries, it's not that bad, really. Depends what you feel like!" they said.

Another concluded: "That is a spectacular-looking pie, though. There is a lot of skill in the pastry work. If it tastes as good as it looks, I would think it's well worth it."
