THEY might not be particularly appetising to look at, but sea cucumbers are already proving to be quite popular in Darwin.
Owner of Darwin seafood supplier Mr Barra, Niall Atkinson, said they recently started selling sea cucumber for the first time and were pleasantly surprised by the interest in the new menu item.
“We decided to start selling them because we sell a lot of abalone as well,” he said.
“They’re very popular with the Chinese community and it’s been going really good so far.
“You can slice up a sea cucumber and eat it in a hot pot, while some people put it in stir fry with bok choy and mushrooms.
“I tried one myself the other day and they’re quite good.”
Mr Atkinson said his business was now preparing for a bumper festive season of seafood sales.
