Croc spotted in Nightcliff

A CURIOUS crocodile has been spotted by locals lurking around Nightcliff Jetty.

The 2m saltie was spotted just offshore about 5pm on Tuesday by some locals walking along the Nightcliff foreshore.

“We thought that it was only a wooden stick, but as it’s got closer there was some movement happening, so I ran around the edge and took this video,” one witness said.

The croc can be seen in the video swimming close by the jetty where people and children watched on.

It comes after another crocodile was recently spotted at Mindil Beach by market-goers last Sunday.

Wildlife rangers also trapped a 4.4m croc at Flora River at a remote nature park 120km southwest of Katherine last month.

Senior wildlife ranger John Burke said crocodile numbers had been increasing across Australia’s tropical north since federal law made them a protected species in the early 1970s.

“They certainly are increasing (in number),” he said. “That’s part of the reason we have the management zones — to reduce the numbers in high-visitation areas, so there’s less chance of interaction between salties and people.”

Anyone who sights a crocodile near Darwin beaches should call 0419 822 859 to report it to the Parks and Wildlife Crocodile Management Unit.
