A Top End fisho was lucky to get away unscathed after an extremely aggressive croc bit a hole in his boat while he slept inside.
Nhulunbuy resident Steve Georgonicas said he was sleeping in his boat during a fishing trip on Cato River in Arnhem Bay on Friday night when an aggressive croc attacked the boat.
“Our 200HP Yamaha was bitten by a large lizard while we were sleeping in it,” he said.
“Luckily the boat is 6m with high sides so we were not in any danger.
“I never keep bait or fish near the transom to attract them, it must have just been angry or mistook the motor for something else.
“If you sleep in your boat, just remember there are some large crocodiles that we share the water with.
“The bite mark is very high up on motor so it must have also came out the water to bite that high up.
“Be careful if you don’t have much freeboard.”
Mr Georgonicas said the incident was his first run in with such an aggressive croc.
“I’ve lived in Gove for 23 years and have fished that area for same amount of time,” he said.
