Absolute croc-head nearly makes a meal out of himself at notorious croc-infested Cahills Crossing

THE LURE of a barra was too much for this bloke, who stood in the middle of Cahills Crossing to flick his line.
Graffiti artist Kaff-Eine Paints, took her parents out to experience the wonders of Kakadu and Cahills Crossing at the start of the month.
It didn’t disappoint, with the trio stunned to see a man shin-deep in the murky East Alligator River on the edge of the causeway while two crocs sat less than 10m away.
While one, estimated to be 4.5m sunned itself on the causeway, the other was hidden beneath the water.
It wasn’t until a white Land Rover Discovery traversed the crossing that onlookers saw the second croc swim away from the road.
Kaff-Eine said she thought the second hidden croc would have been about 3.5m.
“Most of the other fishermen had left the water but this guy was still there. If it wasn’t the car that scared the croc away we wouldn’t have noticed it, he (the fisherman) didn’t even flinch,” he said.
A person then hung out of the driver’s side window of the vehicle as it drove slowly towards the croc, scaring it off the road.

“Part of me was, like, ‘you’re an idiot; if you want to be crocodile bait I’m going to film it’,” she said.
“If you make yourself a meal don’t blame the crocodile for eating you.”
The trio spent a number of hours at the crossing watching the spectacle.
She said tourists were walking out to the middle of the crossing to take photos of the reptiles in the background of their shot.

“There’s so many people fishing there and so many crocodiles, and come on guys crocodile attacks aren’t really accidents, especially there,” she said.
A Parks Australia spokeswoman said people needed to follow signage.
“Kakadu is home to around 10,000 crocs and they inhabit many areas of the national park,” she said.
“We want everyone to stay safe and ask that warning signs are always obeyed, particularly around waterways, and not to take unnecessary risks that may put you and others in danger.”

In May, Gunbalanya officer in charge Remote Sergeant Scott Lewis and other residents were forced to head out into the rising waters of the East Alligator River to tow a stranded vehicle from Cahills Crossing.
Sgt Lewis stood with a shotgun on the back of a truck scouting for crocs while another man hitched towing straps to the Mitsubishi Magna.
