PART of the East Alligator River resembles a wrecking yard after several cars were swept off the Territory’s notorious Cahills Crossing.
Darwin man Dan Leather couldn’t believe his eyes when he arrived at the river crossing, which links Kakadu National Park with Arnhem Land, about 5pm Wednesday.
“We pulled up at Cahills for a look, and there were four cars washed out,” he said.
“I thought ‘some idiots never learn’.”
It is not uncommon for cars to be swept off Cahills Crossing, but Mr Leather said he had never seen so many inundated vehicles in the crocodile-infested river at once.
The scene was particularly dumbfounding for the marine engineer’s great aunt, who’s visiting Australia from England for the first time.
“She was pretty shocked,” Mr Leather said.
“We’d been on an Adelaide River crocodile jumping tour, so she certainly knew they were there.”
Much to the frustration of authorities, drivers often tempt fate by attempting the crossing when it is flooded.
