Top End woman wins coveted Portrait of a Senior Territorian Award

A Top End woman has won the Portrait of a Senior Territorian Art Award.
Darwin Private Hospital nurse Montana Kitching’s portrait of Jacana Ward clerk Vicki Siemer took out the coveted title in 2022.
Ms Kitching said her colleague kept the ward afloat.
“Vicki keeps everyone calm and cared for, and is the one constant that people can count on in such a fast-paced, ever-revolving setting,” she said.
“In hospitals, it’s not just the doctors, nurses, and allied health teams who work long, hard days to make sure the vulnerable, sick, injured and elderly are cared for.
“Without the ward clerks, cleaners, kitchen staff and personal care assistants, our hospitals would be a total shipwreck.”
Ms Kitching was awarded $7000 for her work, ‘Vicki of Jacana’, which will be acquired for the NT government’s permanent collection.
Darwin artist Jose Victor Patalinghug won second prize for his piece, ‘Unfolding Resilience’.
The artwork was a tribute to Wadeye resident Ms Kinmarri’s resilience, strength, and fortitude.
Mr Patalinghug received $2000 in prize money.
Papunya artist Wilfred Thomas Tjampitjinpa painted his grandmother, Narlie Nelson Nakamarra.
Mr Tjampitjinpa won third prize and received $500.
Arts, Culture, and Heritage Minister Chancey Paech said the Portrait of a Senior Territorian Award showcased the Territory’s artistic excellence.
“Equally, the award is a celebration of the contribution our seniors make to their communities; and an opportunity to document the vibrant characters who do so much to enrich the Northern Territory,” he said.
“Works will be on display at Araluen until next February, and I urge everyone to come and view the exhibition, which is certainly one of my arts calendar favourites.”
The People’s Choice Award is open for online voting until February 24.
