Taylor Swift’s recent ex-boyfriend Matty Healy is engaged.
The British singer, 35, proposed to US model Gabbriette Bechtel, 26, who revealed their engagement in several posts on her Instagram story Wednesday, which Healy re-shared.
Referencing Healy’s band The 1975, Bechtel uploaded photos of her huge black diamond ring, writing, “MARRYING THE 1975 IS VERY BRAT.”
The caption is a nod to the title of UK pop singer Charli XCX’s new album Brat, with the newly-engaged couple attending her concert in New York overnight. Charli is engaged to Healy’s bandmate George Daniel, who introduced Healy and Bechtel last year.
Healy and Bechtel were also photographed in public for the first time since announcing their happy news on social media, where they were spotted leaving The Bowery Hotel in New York.
Healy’s mother, UK actress and TV personality Denise Welch, further confirmed the news in an interview, revealing the couple were engaged weeks ago.
They began dating in September, the same time Swift publicly confirmed she was in a relationship with NFL player Travis Kelce.
“I have known for a few weeks that Matty got engaged,” Welch told ITV1 in the UK.
“They went over to see their friends Charli [XCX] and George [Daniel] in New York. I woke up this morning to the fact they’ve put it on Instagram. Instagram official, he has got engaged to Gabbriette.
“Black diamond, he had it made for her and I couldn’t be more thrilled.”
Welch continued to heap praise on her future daughter-in-law. Among her many wonderful qualities, the proud mother confirmed Bechtel owns a pet rat.
“She is from Los Angeles, she is absolutely gorgeous, she does have a rat,” Welch said.
“We couldn’t be happier, she is everything that I would want in a daughter-in-law.”
Swift’s latest album, The Tortured Poets Department, didn’t paint a flattering picture of her brief dalliance with Healy.
While fans expected her 11th studio album to be a scathing break-up collection about long-term boyfriend Joe Alwyn following their split after six years in April 2023, many were surprised to discover a flurry of the most brutal songs were about her month-long romance with Healy last May.
Notably, The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived is rumoured to be inspired by Healy, with scathing lyrics including:“Were you sent by someone who wanted me dead? / Did you sleep with a gun underneath our bed? / You said normal girls were boring, but you were gone by the morning / And in plain sight you hid, but you are what you did /And I’ll forget you, but I’ll never forgive, the smallest man who ever lived.”
Healy played it cool when ambushed by paparazzi about the diss track in April, declaring, “My diss track? I haven’t really listened to that much of it, but I’m sure it’s pretty good.”
Speaking on UK program Loose Women the same month, Healy’s mother joked she “wasn’t aware” Swift even released a new album.
“I wasn’t aware she had an album out at all. I haven’t heard anything about it,” the regular panellist said.
“Anyway … I wish her all the best.”
